Details on Lucien Gibert:
Gibert was a French sculptor born in Saint-Étienne, where he first trained in his father’s cabinetmaking workshop before studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne and Paris under Jean Boucher, later working independently with guidance from Charles Despiau. Influenced by Aristide Maillol, he initially practiced direct carving in wood and stone.
From 1923 he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Indépendants. A bronze medal and travel grant in 1934 led to studies in North Africa, followed by a gold medal at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition. His Danseuse algérienne received the Prix Vital-Cornu in 1941, and later travels through Algeria and Sub-Saharan Africa further informed his Orientalist-inspired work.
He was named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1950 and awarded the Prix de l’Algérie in 1954.
