A particularly fine 19th century French mechanical artist’s easel, substantially constructed in stained oak with brass fittings and heavy castors. The tall architectural frame incorporates an elaborate system of cords, pulleys and a hand-cranked mechanism, allowing the picture ledge to be raised and lowered with precision and secured at the desired height.

The brass mechanism plate is marked “BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.” and inscribed “Bonhomme Mécanique, 12 rue de la Monnaie à Paris.” Beautifully engineered throughout, with unusually robust construction and finely made mechanical components. The rich, well-worn surface retains scratches, marks and traces of its long working life in the studio.
