A French carved marble sundial depicting Eros, the young Greek god of love, kneeling with his dog beneath a sundial. The stone dial plate is inset and rotatable; the hour lines are heavily weathered but are still visible. The patinated brass gnomon has two pins at its base that sit in the dial plate.

Signed and dated on the back of the base, "Barre 1849". The Latin inscription carved on the front of the base, "TEMPORE VICTUS AMOR, RARIT HORAS", translates to "In the time of living, love diminishes the hours"; or more simply, "Love makes time fly."

In weathered antique condition, Eros is missing a wing, and there is loss to his face, feet, and chest. This piece presents very well despite the loss. An RT Facts find.

Dimensions: 23"W x 17"D x 43.5"H, 50"H including gnomon
