A truly special Portuguese transitional settee, circa 1740–1760, with a hand-carved and parcel-gilt walnut frame. The seat and back retain horsehair upholstery now covered in a later jacquard fabric. The carving throughout is exceptional: an undulating crest rail richly worked with shell and foliate motifs rises above shaped upholstery panels that follow the contour of the frame, a characteristic feature of Iberian seating furniture. The passionflowers and cornflowers woven into the jacquard echo the carved flora of the crest rail and are finished with yellow corded piping. The shaped apron is centered by gilded cartouches between each cabriole leg. The front legs and outer rear legs terminate in claw-and-ball feet and are joined by Queen Anne-style stretchers.
This settee is ready to place and presents exceptionally well. It is very sturdy and shows only minor wear consistent with age. An RT Facts find.
