Pair of Early 19th Century French Louis XVI Style Terra Cotta Sculptures of Madame de Pompadour as Chimeras

A very good pair of early 19th century Directoire garden sphinxes in the likeness of the 18th century court mistress, Madame de Pompadour. She is depicted here on the robed body of a sphinx. Sculpted in beautiful French terra cotta and perched on freestanding painted wood bases. These sphinxes are an interpretation of those placed in the garden of the Castle of Ménars. Both in great antique condition. Can be used outdoors, though they should be housed indoors during the winter months.
