Pair of Faux Porphyry Pedestals

Price $4,750.00

An excellent pair of 19th century English faux Porphyry pedestals. Porphyry is the rarest and most historically important stone in the world. It comes from only one source: a single mountain in Egypt that the Romans called Mons Porphyry. It is a purple volcanic stone, and it is very fine and dense with small, white, iconic inclusions. At the center of the Pantheon in Rome is a large circle of porphyry on the floor, where, for 300 years, new emperors stood to be crowned. These pedestals are Scagliola Porphyry, which means they are a mix of plaster, glue, and dye that is then painted and polished. A very well done example with nice scale, proportion, and heavy weight. Due to their composition, these pedestals are intended for indoor use only.
