A large and very rare 18th century lignum vitae vessel with pestle. Lignum vitae translates to “wood of life.” It is a remarkably dense and hard wood native to the Caribbean that has long been used for its medicinal purposes and in the making of mortars and pestles, pins, balls, bearings, and gears. This vessel is rare due to its large size and it exhibits a beautiful patina from centuries of use.
